For a Ukrainian visa your passport must be valid at least 3 months after you leave Ukraine, issued within the last 10 years and have two blank pages, with one 35 × 45 mm colour photo (Resolution No. 118, para. 5). For the work permit, the employer files copies of its pages with a certified Ukrainian translation (Art. 42-2).
The passport is the one document every stage of a Ukrainian route uses: the employer copies it for the work permit, the embassy places the visa in it, and the State Migration Service issues the residence permit against it. The rules for it are few and exact. This page lists them, shows where the passport goes at each stage, and covers two points to settle early: a name spelled differently elsewhere, and a passport that runs out mid-route.

Validity on a work route
The visa rule is the floor: three months beyond the date you declare for leaving Ukraine. On the work route you enter on a D visa and then live in Ukraine on a residence permit for the term of the work permit, up to 2 years for an ordinary employee (Law No. 5067-VI, Art. 42-3). A passport valid for that whole term keeps every document pointing to the same passport. If yours runs out sooner, renew it before the employer files the permit application, since the application carries copies of the pages.
One spelling across the file
The certified Ukrainian translation fixes how your name is written in Ukrainian, and the Ukrainian documents that follow are built on it. Before that, check the Latin spelling on the passport against your CNIC, degree, police certificate, bank statement and contract. HEC attests a degree under a different name only with documentary evidence, for example after marriage, and MoFA sends doubtful documents back to the issuer for re-verification (SOPs §1.3). A spelling corrected before filing is a small fix; after filing, it can mean a new round of stamps.

In Ukraine: the residence permit
After arrival, the temporary residence permit is applied for with the passport containing the D visa, unless a rule provides otherwise, and with a translation of the passport (Resolution No. 322, paras. 32–33). The rest of that file is in residence permit documents.
